"Using the simplest curved form of the arc as its distinct identity, Arc house gives meaning to a personalized home."
DESCRIPTION
Arc House is characterized by its distinctive curved form that can be recognised from the front façade of the house. As an intermediate terrace house located in the suburban enclave of Serangoon gardens, the house stands out for its simplicity of form and character. In developing the design for this house, we worked closely with the owners who are a young couple keen on building a unique and bespoke family home.
CONCEPT
With the intermediate terrace house typology in Singapore, the main facade is the front. The house has an easterly orientation with the front façade experiencing the morning sun. Our strategy was to capture this morning sun essence and create a home that had good natural lighting and ventilation. In addition, we wanted to give a sense of spaciousness to a house that occupied a modest land size of below 2000ft2.
Located in a 2-storey envelope control zone, we took on the challenge of incorporating a mezzanine for the house. It was this idea that encapsulated the grandeur of space for the living and dining space. The high ceiling of the mezzanine gave this space its voluminous ambience. Curves round off the glass balustrades at the mezzanine to imbue a sense of sensuality within the house.
An open-riser staircase brings one through the upper floors of the house. At the mezzanine, an open concept lounge increases the entertainment space for the living area at the first level.
The single arc-shaped glass planter marks the focus of the house and is noticeably located at the foot of each flight of stairs. Sunlight beams through this planter and brings warmth and illumination throughout the house. Screening is included at the mezzanine and attic level.
The second level is the location of three bedrooms. The bedrooms are served by two bathrooms, one of which is an ensuite. During the building of the house, the couple announced the arrival of a baby girl. In good timing, the bedroom with the ensuite is now her bedroom.
Curves continue to permeate the house to the attic level. At the attic, the owners decided that the entire floor would be their dedicated master bedroom. Designed with a luxurious touch, the entire floor uses polished grey marble for its flooring. The master ensuite includes a custom-designed large basin and matching natural marble stone for the bathroom walls and floor. The overall feel of the house is one of warmth and understated elegance.
