“Mezzanine house is a family home inspired by the layered lifestyle that has encompassed modern homes in Singapore; the overlap of live, work and play areas throughout the house.”

DESCRIPTION

Conceptualized as a modern home in the tranquil and leafy suburb of Faber Garden, Mezzanine house encapsulates the layered lifestyle of Singaporeans. Our design brief was simply to create a home that would allow for the areas to live and work, with provision of ample indoor and outdoor areas for play.

CONCEPT

Ground floor: Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living

Upon entrance, the home opens into a generously proportioned first level that immediately impresses with its open-concept design. The living, dining and dry kitchen areas flow into one another, creating a sense of spaciousness. At the side elevation of the house, a series of full-height sliding glass panels allows the opening of the living area onto the outdoor garden and swimming pool.

This fluid connection between indoors and out enhances cross-ventilation and bathes the interior in natural light, typical of a tropical-modern home concealed discretely behind the social spaces lies the function wet kitchen, catered for Asian cooking, along with a maid’s room and bathroom tucked away for privacy. A feature wall hides the household shelter and blends seamlessly with lift panels.

Architectural Features: Staircase & Lift

A striking open-riser staircase acts as a sculptural feature, connecting throughout the home’s levels. The stair is screened by a artfully designed display shelves that allows the display of the owner’s photos and souvenirs from their overseas holidays.

Mezzanine Level: Double volume ambience

The statement feature is the mezzanine that is above the living and dining space – giving the house an expansive double volume ambience to the living areas. It also houses a spacious home office that is essential for the owner. The open plan workspace is bright and airy with direct access to the open terrace situated above the car porch canopy. Finished with astro-turf and surrounded with greenery, the terrace offers a tranquil space for coffee breaks, casual meetings or evening relaxation.

Second Level: Private Family Quarters

The second floor is dedicated to restful private spaces. The master bedroom is a luxurious retreat complete with a double basin bathroom that features a rain shower with a unique view – framed look to a lush green wall, bringing the outdoors in even during moments of solitude. Two additional bedrooms each have their own ensuite bathrooms, as provided for the children of the owners.

Attic Level: Entertainment & Wellness

At the attic level, a generous family entertainment space takes center stage. Designed as a multi-purpose space, it serves as a media, lounge, games zone and home gym all in one. An outdoor terrace connects it to panoramic views of the neighborhood. A feature bath that features a pedestal basin wood paneling adds a touch of indulgence. This top floor retreat encourages family bonding, while promoting wellness and rejuvenation.

Conclusion: A Harmonious Urban Oasis

This modern tropical home in Singapore is a masterclass in integrating natural elements with contemporary design. It’s a space where every level serves a purpose – social, personal and recreational – tailored to the rhythms of family life. With its lush setting, smart layout, and emphasis on connection and comfort, the home stands as a model of what tropical urban living can be: grounded in nature, designed for flexibility, and full of life.
